Why slab leaks are a Central Texas problem

Almost everything built in McLennan County since the 1960s sits on a slab-on-grade foundation, and that slab sits on Blackland Prairie clay. Houston Black clay is among the more active soils in the country: it takes on water through a wet winter and expands, then dries through the summer and pulls away, opening cracks in the yard wide enough to put a hand into.
